In March 2020 the Chief Medical Officer recommended the temporary suspension of the medical appraisal process to enable doctors to focus their attention on delivery of care.

From the 1st October 2020, appraisal re-commenced across all sectors in Wales with a focus on wellbeing to enable those that wished to take up the opportunity, to have a supportive discussion with a peer.

The period 27th March 2020 to 31st March 2021 was also designated as an approved missed period. An approved missed appraisal postponed the appraisal process for 12 months. Therefore, if you took the approved missed appraisal option between the above dates, you will be expected to undertake your appraisal in 12 months’ time in your allocated quarter.

This resource aims to provide guidance on how medical appraisal can be carried out considerately and effectively with a focus on wellbeing and support.

It has been developed by the Revalidation Support Unit in collaboration with Dr Rob Morgan, GP Appraiser and Vice-Chair of RCGP Wales.
