Abdominal problems
- a) Gastrointestinal reflux.
Singers are at particular risk of silent acid reflux, with symptoms including decreased vocal range, a raspy quality to the voice, discomfort on singing and decreased vocal stamina.
Improving lifestyle and a course of a proton pump inhibitor to suppress stomach acid usually resolves symptoms. Avoiding large meals before a performance and before bed, and using several pillows in bed at night is also helpful.
A study 27 also showed an increased prevalence of GI reflux in wind players, with flute and double-reed players at particular risk.
- b) Hernias.
Unsurprisingly, brass and wind players, bagpipers and singers are all at increased risk of hernias.
